What we’re doing this year

Delegates at the convention voted in favor of the following national initiatives for the coming year.

TROY DAVIS WORK.
Delegates voted in favor of renewing our commitment to building the Troy Davis struggle. Martina Correia is on the CEDP board and the point person for this work; you can reach her at martina.correia@gmail.com.

HIGHLIGHT THE CRISIS IN THE TEXAS DEATH PENALTY.
Delegates voted in favor of creating an “Action Kit” for each chapter that can include a fact sheet on the death penalty in Texas and on cases we are highlighting, like that of Rodney Reed and members of the DRIVE Movement. This focus on Texas can help focus attention on it.

As part of this initiative, we would encourage chapters to hold meetings to discuss the crisis in Texas, and to show the DVD State vs. Reed, an excellent documentary about Texas death row prisoner Rodney Reed. We also discussed the element of “dogging Governor Rick Perry,” as he is on the campaign trail this year. Point people for information on this are Jeannine Scott, who can be reached at jscott115@austin.rr.com and Lily Hughes who can be contacted by emailing lily@nodeathpenalty.org

MUMIA ABU-JAMAL WORK.
Delegates voted to renew efforts to build support for Mumia. Chapters can show the movie In Prison My Whole Life, organize a book discussion on Mumia’s latest book Jailhouse Lawyers, and/or organize petitionings in support of Mumia. Board member Lawrence Hayes who can be reached at Ghana_hayes@yahoo.com and Delaware chapter member Sandi Jones who you can reach at jonessa@Rowan.edu are heading up this work.

SPEAKING TOUR
To begin in the fall of 2010 and run through the spring of 2011. Theme to be decided.  Lee Wengraf will be the National Tour Coordinator; she can be reached at lwengraf@earthlink.net.

RAISE MONTLY SUSTAINERS TO 150.
Last year, we made it to 125, so this year, delegates agreed to try again to make it to 150. And just to report, we are well on our way. During the convention, we signed up six more monthly sustainers!  Lily Hughes will be overseeing this effort. You can reach her at lily@nodeathpenalty.org.

RESOLUTION ON LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE SENTENCES.
For the past two years, we have called on convention delegates to renew their commitment to this important resolution concerning Life Without the Possibility of Parole sentences.  Delegates again voted in favor of supporting this statement: We do not advocate life without the possibility of parole sentences as a “just” alternative to the death penalty.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The CEDP board of directors for the next year will consist of: Crystal Bybee, Mark Clements, Martina Correia, Pat Foley, Lawrence Hayes, Lily Hughes, Ronnie Kitchen, Marlene Martin, Derrel Myers, Sandra Reed, Yusef Salaam, Jeannine Scott, Liliana Segura and Lee Wengraf.  Darby Tillis is an honorary board member.  We are proud to introduce the three newest additions to our board -- Mark, Ronnie and Lawrence. Welcome!

GOOD LUCK TO JACKIE AND WELCOME TO MARK!
Jackie Whitworth stepped down from her office position in December to go study abroad for several months. We cannot thank her enough for her work with the Campaign and will eagerly await her return!  Mark Clements is now our new office administrator working part-time in the Chicago office. Everyone who attended convention can attest to Mark’s enthusiasm, and we look forward to his working with us in this new role. He can be reached at Mark@nodeathpenalty.org or at 773-955-4841. Lily  Hughes is still working halftime as a national organizer out of her “home office” in Austin, Texas. She can be reached at lily@nodeathpenalty.org.
