We Need Your Support, So Continue The Struggle

Greetings to all comrades who are dedicated to ending state-sanctioned murder.

As a staunch supporter of yours and a victim of the criminal justice system in Illinois, I must commend all of you on the outside for listening to the voices on the inside. However, there is something that has been weighing heavily on my mind that I would like to share with those who have witnessed the injustice in the system. I'm afraid that, while I am innocent, I didn't get the death penalty, and so my cries are beginning to fall on deaf ears.

What about those of us who have been given a sentence I call attempted death row/state-attempted murder? The state sought the death penalty in my case, and once the jury erroneously found me guilty, that same jury had to vote again, only this time it was whether to impose the death penalty or not. Everyone on death row had to go through the exact same death penalty phase and mitigating process that I went through. The only difference was the jury voted against killing me.

I know this may sound insane, but I wish they had given me the death penalty. That way, my appeal would have gone directly to the state Supreme Court, my post conviction would have gone to the capital litigation division, and I would have had the support of the Campaign to End the Death Penalty. In other words, I would have been home by now.

You see, I have been kidnapped since 1988 and given a 40-year sentence based solely on the testimony of one witness who viewed a six-foot tall, 150-pound male for a total of two seconds running the opposite direction from where she stood at a window on a second floor from 50 to 75 feet away at 10:30 p.m. But guess what? I'm five-foot-three, and at that time, I weighed 120 pounds. Three alibi witnesses testified on my behalf, yet I was given attempted death.

In conclusion, please don't turn your backs on the rest of us who are truly innocent but not on death row. We need your support, so continue the struggle. I would love to hear from any that are concerned.

God Bless,
