Mobile Jail is a medium security detention center for adult inmates that is locally operated by the Mobile City Police Department. This facility serves the city of Mobile and the surrounding area.

The Mobile Jail houses inmates that have been convicted of crimes and serving a sentence that is 12 months or less as well as those who are still awaiting trial. Inmates that are sentenced for more than 12 months are transferred to a federal or state prison.

A majority of the time inmates at Mobile Jail are required to stay in their individual cells that are divided up between two floors. There is also a large common area with tables and chairs that the inmates are allowed to use at times.

Send a Mail/Package

In order to keep everyone safe and secure the Mobile Jail staff inspects all incoming and outgoing mail. Please refrain from sending any contraband in the mail.

Inmates at Mobile Jail are allowed to receive 4"x 6 " plain white postcards in the mail that are metered, unstamped with a pencil or blue or black ink only.

Keep in mind that all mail is opened under the supervision of a jail staff member.

Sending Money

To fund an inmate’s account Mobile Jail allows money orders to be sent to the jail via postal mail. It will take several days for the funds to be available in the inmate’s account.

Many times electronic services are accepted to fund an inmate’s account such as JPay and Western Union. The funds will be available in the inmate’s account almost immediately using an electronic service.

Inmates depend on their loved ones to fund their accounts so they can buy basic daily needs such as sneakers, clothing, snacks and so much more. These items are bought at the Mobile Jail commissary.

Phone Calls

Inmates are permitted to call their family and friends during phone time. Inmates make collect calls to their loved ones from Mobile Jail. Keep in mind the receiver of the collect call is responsible for the collect call fee.

Visitation Rules

Inmates are allowed to have visitors in Mobile Jail, however, you will need to follow the visitation rules and regulations that are listed below:

  • Dress modestly

  • Present Government-issued photo ID

  • You will be required to go through a metal detector

  • You may be searched

  • No personal belongings (including cell phones) in the visitation area.

  • A family member under 18 must be accompanied by their legal guardian.
