About Connecticut Department of Corrections

On July 1, 1968, the General Assembly officially established the Connecticut Department of Correction. This is when the statutorily separated institutions including parole and other similar functions among the State Jail Administration was established into the cabinet who was run by the commissioner, who was ultimately picked by the Governor.

The very first commission was Ellis C. MacDougall. MacDougall was the one who paved the way for the Connecticut Department of Corrections.

When the Connecticut Department of Corrections first started, they had 12 facilities that they operated. These facilities were:

  • State Prison in Somers
  • Montville Youth Farm
  • New Haven Youth Farm
  • Osborn Farm in Enfield
  • State Reformatory in Cheshire
  • State Farm & Women Prison in Niantic
  • Litchfield Youth Farm
  • Bridgeport Youth Farm
  • Hartford Youth Farm
  • Haddam Youth Farm
  • Brooklyn Youth Farm

As of current, the Connecticut Department of Corrections has an excellent workforce. All new hires within the agency will have to undergo a minimum of 10 weeks of training brought to them by the Maloney Center for Training and Staff Development. This training is what many agencies throughout the United States use.
