About Illinois Department of Corrections

In 1970, the Illinois Department of Corrections was officially established. During this establishment, for the first time all state prisons, juvenile and adult parole services, and juvenile centers were all managed by one agency.

It was not until 1974, when the Illinois Department of Corrections established their training academy, which was put in place for ALL parole and correctional officers that were employed by the agency.

The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice was officially established on July 1, 2006, which then officially separated juvenile and adult correctional systems.

Back in 1970, when the Illinois Department of Corrections was officially established the agency only had 7 adult facilities that they were responsible for. Since then, many laws in Illinois has become much stricter, which in return has resulted in longer sentences with more inmates coming into the agencies hands.

As of today, the Illinois Department of Corrections oversees 25 correctional facilities alongside adult transition centers, work camps, and even boot camps.
