The Leavenworth Federal Correctional Institution is also known as USP Leavenworth for short.
The USP Leavenworth was constructed back in 1977. The USP Leavenworth is a minimum-security federal institution with a detention center. The main campus at the USP Leavenworth is a medium-security and the detention center is minimum-security.
Originally the USP Leavenworth was designed to house juvenile inmates, but this completely changed back in 1984. As of late, the USP Leavenworth only houses male inmates.
Together the main campus and the detention center can house over 1750 inmates at one given time.
The USP Leavenworth is composed of 5 housing units. These housing units contain multiple occupancy cells with 6 single-person cells as well.
The USP Leavenworth also comes equipped with a Special Housing Unit, which can comfortably house 24 inmates.
The detention center is composed of 4 open style dormitory housing units.
The USP Leavenworth also offers its inmates self-improving programs and educational programs as well. Inmates will have the chance to earn their GED, if they do not have one already.

Sending Money
The USP Leavenworth provides you three different ways to send inmates money.
Why do inmates need money you may ask?
Inmates will need money in their accounts to pay any fees associated with their stay in the facility, to call home, to send letters home, and to purchase various items from the prison’s commissary.
You can send money by money order, MoneyGram, and even Western Union.
Phone Calls
Communication is a big deal for inmates and families alike. You will not be permitted to contact the USP Leavenworth to talk to the inmate, but they will be able to pick up the phone to contact you.
Inmates will be responsible to have money in their phone account to ensure they can make these calls. All calls will be limited to 15-minutes. Inmates will have 300 minutes of phone time a month from January to October to use. During the holiday's inmates will get an extra 100 minutes a month they can use.
Visitation Rules
The USP Leavenworth will permit inmates to have visitors on Saturdays Sundays, and Mondays between the hours of 8 am to 3 pm.
The detention center will permit inmates to have visitors on Saturdays, and Sundays between the hours of 8 am to 3 pm.
In both facilities, when inmates have visitors, they will only be permitted 4 visitors at once. This number does include those under the age of 16 as well.
At the beginning of each month, every inmate will have 30 visiting points. Weekday visits will cost 1 point and weekend visits will cost 2 points.
If you are going to visit an inmate that is situated in the Special Housing Unit, you will only be permitted to visit on the third Thursday each month during the hours of 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
