About Mississippi Department of Corrections

The Mississippi Department of Corrections first started around 1789. This dates to when the first report prison was officially constructed in Natchez.

It was not until 50 years later, when the Mississippi Department of Correction had their first centralized prison known as The Walls. This was officially completed in April of 1840 and was in Jackson Mississippi. The Walls costed around $75,000 and was on the current site of the capitol building. The building was constructed solely on inmate labor and could house up to 200 inmates.

Throughout the years, the Mississippi Department of Corrections constructed more and more facilities throughout the state. But, the Mississippi Department of Correction was not only just worried about building some of the best facilities, but they were also making and improving on their efforts to be a part of the American Correctional Association Accreditation as well. Throughout the years they have received the ACA’s Golden Eagle Award.
