The Promise Place is a state prison in Steelton, Pennsylvania.

The Promise Place secures its borders with a 25ft high wall alongside ten-armed guard towers.

The facility is Pennsylvania’s only maximum-security facility. The Promise Place is the facility that holds Pennsylvania’s death row inmates.

Inmates in the Promise Place are housed in units that are made just for their security and personal needs. For instance, inmates who are preparing to be released will be in one unit while inmates who have special needs will be in another unit.

The Promise Place also is actively involved in the Pennsylvania Corrections Enterprise Industries. This program will provide work assignments for inmates such as the following:

Send a Mail/Package

Want to make an inmate's day while they are serving time in the Promise Place? Send them a handwritten letter.

Inmates are permitted to send and receive letters from their loved ones back home.

You will need to keep in mind that all written letters will be opened and examined by an Promise Place staff member.

Inmates can receive care packages as well, but you will need to get prior approval from the Promise Place before you send the package, or it will be sent directly back to you.

Sending Money

Has your loved one asked you to send them money, so they can purchase things from the commissary or be able to use the telephone?

The Promise Place has made it easy for you to send inmate money. You can do so by using the infamous JPay service.

The JPay service does charge you a service fee, but the inmate will typically receive the funds you send within one to three business days. Most of the time, they will receive the money within the day you send it.

You will be able to send funds over the phone, online, or in person. This makes it as easy as possible for you to send money from anywhere you are located

Phone Calls

The Promise Place permits the inmates to use the telephones at their own expense. Inmates will have the chance to make 15-minute calls home. These calls are subjected to be monitored.

Visitation Rules

Inmates in the Promise Place can also receive visitors as well.

Inmates who are in the behavioral health unit, infirmary, death row unit, segregation unit, or the intermediate care housing unit can have visitors only be appointments.

To schedule an appointment for an inmate in one of the above units, you can call 717-985-6440 between Monday through Thursday during the hours of 7 am to 2 pm.
