The Western Juvenile Detention is a medium-security detention center located in Rapid City, South Dakota. Operated locally by the Butte County Sheriff's Office, this jail holds inmates who are awaiting trial or sentencing. The Butte County Sheriff's Department has the largest number of law enforcement officers in the county and is the largest facility in South Dakota. The current Sheriff was sworn in as Sheriff in September 2009.

They are given three meals a day and are allowed to purchase snacks from the commissary. They are given an hour of recreational time each day where they are encouraged to go outside.

Visitation Rules

Western Juvenile Detention requires all visitors to fill out an application prior to visitation. If you want to visit an inmate at Western Juvenile Detention, carefully fill out the application.
