Youth Challenge Center is a South Dakota state prison in Custer. These male inmates come from all sorts of security levels.
The main mission of the Youth Challenge Center is to provide an environment where inmates can be accountable for their actions (past and present) through improvement and self-development.
The Youth Challenge Center offers its inmates a wide variety of work assignments and vocational programs. These programs and assignments were created to help inmates not re-offend once they are released from the facility.
Inmates in the Youth Challenge Center will also have the chance to earn a GED through the basic adult education courses.
The Youth Challenge Center is the facility that maintains the surrounding areas with their community service crew that is made up of inmates from the facility.

Send a Mail/Package
While an inmate is serving out their sentence in the Youth Challenge Center, they can send and receive letters from their loved ones on the outside.

Sending Money
The Youth Challenge Center will accept money being sent to them from three different methods. These methods are the following:

Electronic Funds Transfer

Mail a Money Order or a Check
If an inmate needs funds within the next few days, it is best to use the electronic funds transfer. However, you will be paying a service fee, but the inmate will receive the funds within 1-3 business days.
If you opt-in to use the lockbox or mailing methods, there is no fee to use them, but they will take longer than the electronic funds transfer.
Phone Calls
The Youth Challenge Center is big on keeping communication lines open between the inmates and their family. Inmates will have the chance to contact their family members.
Inmates will be able to make 15-minute phone calls home. This phone calls home will be monitored by prison staff to ensure the safety for everyone involved.
These phone calls will be at the inmate or the family’s expense, so inmates will need money in their commissary accounts.
Visitation Rules
The Youth Challenge Center allows inmates to have visitors. If you would like to visit an inmate, while they are in the Youth Challenge Center, you will first need to read the following visitor guidelines.
Once you have read the guidelines, you can then set up an appointment to visit an inmate using the system. You will be required to have a visit scheduled in order to come to the facility.
Please keep in mind that all juveniles (children under the age of 18) must always be accompanied by an adult while they are in the Youth Challenge Center.
