About Washington State Department of Corrections

Did you know that before the 1970s that all state prison facilities were officially run by the Washington Department of Institutions? It was not until Daniel J. Evans, the Washington Governor at the time moved the Washington Department of Institution to the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.

It was not until July 1, 1981, when all state prison facilities were officially taken from the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services and were given to the newly established Washington Department of Corrections thanks to the 1981 Corrections Reform Act.

The Washington State Department of Corrections acquired all the state prison facilities in 1981 and since then, they have been the only agency that oversees the management and daily operation of the facilities.

The Washington State Department of Corrections main vision is to provide the best possible facilities for the offenders while also providing public safety for everyone.
